This week, NLMS seventh graders are reading the teleplay "The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street." Students wore nametags to go along with their assigned characters in the script. Students have done a great job getting into character and bringing this drama to life. Next week, students will analyze each characters' actions to determine who they believe to be the real "monster" in the story.
Color Run Fall Festival
September is Attendance Awareness Month. NLMS has several incentive opportunities for student attendance. While students with perfect attendance in September will receive free nachos at the PTO Color Run on October 13, students may also earn semester exam exemptions and qualify for the Points to Success semester field trip.
NLMS faculty and staff supported Bookers restaurant in Sylacauga by ordering lunch plates today. A portion of the proceeds will feed the needy in Sylacauga on Monday, November 13th. Thank you Bookers and Mrs. Linda for a delicious lunch!
In commemoration of 9/11, Mrs. Merrell's 7th and 6th grade students created a collaborative art poster that was displayed in the hallways of NLMS. Students also watched and discussed clips from a 9/11 docuseries, which provided firsthand accounts of the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, the fate of United Airlines Flight 93, the challenges of rescue and recovery efforts, and the U.S. government's response to the attacks. To better understand how individual Americans experienced that fateful day, several students also conducted historical interviews with family members and loved ones.
Friday, September 15th is picture day for Nichols-Lawson students.
Eighth grade student Isaac Foster attended Space Camp in Huntsville, Alabama this summer where he got to participate in a variety of space related activities. He has shared his experience with his Math 8 class at NLMS.
NLMS seventh graders studied "Rikki-tikki-tavi" by Rudyard Kipling. After reading, students wrote a paragraph in which they argued whether the cobras Nag and Nagaina are truly the villains of the story or are simply misunderstood. Students enjoyed discussing the evidence for both sides of the argument. As an extension, Advanced English classes held a class debate on the same topic with guest judges who determined a winning team.
Students in Mrs. Lane’s Health Science class used the scientific method to determine if their foil boat creations would float. They then discussed how they would use the scientific method to determine if someone had a fever.
We would like to introduce the 2023-24 Peer Helper team. This group was trained on how to be a trusted, effective Peer Helper and how to make a positive difference in our school and community. The BB Comer library generously allowed us to use their amazing facilities for the day. Training was followed by pizza and a trip to the Blue Bell Parlor!

Mrs. Fowler's 7th Grade Life Science students have been learning about eukaryotic cells. During this lab, students examined onion cells under the microscopes. Students were able to see the nucleus (the "brain" of the cell) as well as the cell wall (the support structure of plant cells)!

Yesterday, we celebrated our community mentors before the last Advisory of the school year. We are thankful for these men and women for taking the time with our students to share about the CHAMPION qualities we strive for at NLMS!
