Mr. Vest- Art teacher receives state honor
The Alabama Art Education Association has honored Jack Vest as the Elementary Art Teacher of the Year for Alabama. Vest is a third year elementary Art teacher at Sylacauga City Schools, working with all students at Indian Valley and Pinecrest Elementary.
Vest received the honor based on the nomination by Ms. Phyllis Horne, Treasurer of the Alabama Art Education Association, with supporting letters from Sylacauga’s elementary principals. He has demonstrated instrumental leadership in bringing art together with all school programs, including his involvement in the love of literacy learning experience at Pinecrest Elementary School this past summer. Together with literacy teachers Kate Barton, Lindsey Kissic, and Kristy Harmon, Vest was able to help inspire students with art as they improved their reading skills during this camp designed to connect the two disciplines. Pinecrest principal Julie Green remarked that Vest is “genuinely dedicated to the students and teachers, and serves as an example with his caring nature and desire to go to all measures to help everyone.”
Pinecrest has been designated as a Bicentennial School by Governor Kay Ivey, and Vest is currently collaborating with fourth grade teachers to promote Alabama’s Bicentennial in his art classes. Green added that she feels confident this collaboration will enhance learning for all Pinecreststudents.
Dr. Monte Abner, Principal of Indian Valley, said, “I have been amazed at (Vest’s) ability to inspire children to develop a love and passion for art. His enthusiasm, love, and passion for teaching his students is evident by the many hours he dedicates after school to planning.”
Superintendent Dr. Jon Segars said, “I was fortunate to see the results of the literacy camp over the summer and really liked the cooperation between all of these teachers. We certainly want to congratulate Jack on this honor, and I am encouraged by his efforts to inspire the love of art in his young students.”
